News : GTX590

EVGA wouldn't give us many details about the card in question, but they did say it's a future dual-GPU product. Given that EVGA is an exclusive Nvidia partner, that essentially confirms something we've half expected for some time now: a dual-GPU, SLI-on-a-stick video card must be on the way, presumably as a member of the GeForce GTX 500 series.

As you can see, there are three DVI outputs on the card, made possible by the presence of two GPU display engines. This card should be capable of driving three monitors and allowing games to run across them all at once via Surround Gaming, Nvidia's answer to AMD's Eyefinity.

This is a decidedly high-end product. The card is relatively long and sports a pair of eight-pin auxiliary power connectors, suggesting that a beefy PSU will be needed in order just to run one of these babies.

Judging by our mystery card's apparent power and cooling requirements, we'd expect it to house a pair of GF110 GPUs, perhaps de-tuned a bit from the fastest single-GPU GF110 implementation, the GeForce GTX 580, simply so that two chips can be powered and cooled on a single card. The presence of eight Samsung K4G10325F one-gigabit GDDR5 DRAM chips on the back of the board, four per GPU, means there's at least 1GB of total memory on the card. One possibility is that there are eight matching DRAM chips on the other side of the board, or 1GB per GPU. If true, that would mean only four of each GF110's six memory controller/ROP partition units are enabled. It's also possible there are 12 DRAM chips on the other side of the card, with five memory/ROP units enabled per GPU, making this card more like a pair of GTX 570s. The latter configuration may be more likely.

The presence of an SLI connector also suggests the possibility of a four-way SLI configuration based on a pair of these video cards running in tandem.

That nifty triple-fan cooler is a custom job from EVGA. The company was showing off a couple of cards with coolers designed around this motif, including a smaller and rather handsome GeForce GTX 570.

We already know AMD has plans for a video card—code-named Antilles and expected to be sold as the Radeon HD 6990—based on a pair of the Cayman GPUs that power the Radeon HD 6950 and 6970. Now it would seem Nvidia has a rather direct answer to Antilles in the works, as does its close partner EVGA. We don't have any word yet on the timing of this monster's availability, but judging by its presence here with a custom cooler attached, it surely can't be too far from release.

Dual GF110 GPUs

Since the dust has sort of settled around the launch of AMD's flagship dual-GPU HD 6990 card, we can now talk about NVidia's upcoming dual-GPU solution, the GTX 590. We have already seen the card up and running at Cebit but the precise specs aren't carved in stone so there was no talk regarding those. According to the latest rumours, Nvidia has chosen the March 22nd as the launch date.

The date doesn't come as a surprise as it is also the launch date for EA/Crytek's Crysis 2 game. Nvidia has been working tight with Crytek in order for this game to run smooth in its 3D enviroment. Unfortunately, the DirectX 9 debacle with Crysis 2 was a big let down that will be hopefully fixed, sooner or later. The latest rumours that we are hearing are that the GTX 590 features full fledged GF110 chips which means 1024 CUDA cores (512 per GPU), or simply two GTX 580 GPUs slapped together on a single PCB.

The last rumour that we heard was that the card has GTX 580 specs but at lower clock speeds in order to keep the TDP at reasonable level. The performance should up somewhere between GTX 570 and GTX 580, per GPU. The TDP might end up a bit higher than the HD 6990 as NVidia will probably still talk about "average TDP" and it will need two PCI-Express 8-pin power connectors. The card that we saw back at Cebit wasn't noisy, even with Nvidia's reference dual-slot cooler.

The most important piece of information is the price and unfortunately there hasn't been any talk regarding it. Best guess is that Nvidia will most certainly make the price according to the HD 6990 as that is simply a only advantage that you get when you launch the card after the competition.

Of course, Nvidia still hasn't officialy talked about the specs of the card so anything is possible. Hopefully a more solid info will appear as we draw closer to the March 22nd.

Bear in mind that specs are coming from various sources and nothing has still been confirmed by Nvidia, but it looks like GTX 590 will end up clocked at around 600MHz for the GPU. Those 1024 CUDA cores, or simply shaders, will end up at around 1200MHz, while the memory should be set at around 3400MHz and paried up with a 2x384-bit memory interface. The reference GTX 580 was working at 772MHz for the GPU and 4008MHz for memory.

Not straying from its tradition, Nvidia is still talking about "average TDP" which will be set at around 375W for the GTX 590. It needs two 8-pin PCI-Express power connectors, and in case you are wondering, the average TDP for the GTX 580 was 244W. Once again, Nvidia is also talking about noise, and we must say that the card was pretty quiet, at least the one seen running at Cebit, and according to rumours, it should end up to be just a bit louder than the GTX 580.
