@ 500$ aujourd'hui tu as une GTX580.

Specifications showing up all around

We already wrote that Nvidia planned to hold a GTX 680 related event yesterday, and it is no wonder that we now have a bit more info regarding the card, while Chiphell has provided a much more clear picture of the actual card.

It looks like our sources were spot on yesterday when we heard that the new GTX 680 will feature two 6-pin PCI-Express connectors and have a TDP of around 200W (190W to be precise). When combined with 1536 shader units, 2GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 6GHz and, according to what we heard, a very high GPU clock, it comes as no surprise that Nvidia is claiming higher performance per Watt for its upcoming GTX 680.

This is a big win for Nvidia as we aren't used to hearing performance per Watt from Nvidia and now it appears that the tide has turned. The performance of the GTX 680 is somewhere around Radeon HD 7970 as it wins in some games and benchmarks and loses in others. Of course, these are all results that came from Nvidia so we'll hold our judgement until we see some reviews.

As noted before, the card is based on Nvidia 28nm GK104 Kepler chip that is around 300mm² in size.

The bad part of the story is that our sources were again spot on with the US $549 price tag. Nvidia has a card with similar performance and better TDP so the US $549 price tag isn't really a surprise. We guess that Nvidia has additional maneuvering room when it comes to price and we just need to wait and see if AMD is going to bite down and head into a new round of price wars.

Nvidia GTX 680 to go against HD 7970

Better performance per Watt, same price

According to rumours that we are hearing from our sources close to company, it appears that the upcoming Nvidia GTX 680 graphics based on the GK104 Kepler GPU will be priced at around US $550, basically the same price as the AMD Radeon HD 7970. We are also hearing that Nvidia made a quite bold claim, promising to deliver better performance per Watt than the competition.

We are still trying to chase down more sources and try to confirm some other rumours, but for now we are hearing that the performance should be quite similar to the Radeon HD 7970 as the new GTX 680 card wins in some benchmarks and games and lose in some others. Overall it should win most DirectX 11 benchmarks, at least that is what we are hearing.

We are also currently hearing that the TDP should be somewhere around 200W and it will need two 6-pin PCI-Express power connectors.

The decision to go for a $550 price tag doesn't come as a surprise although we were hoping that Nvidia might go for a lower price in order to hurt AMD sales and restart those price wars we all love. Of course, price is never carved in stone and Nvidia can easily change it, but for now, our sources are pretty sure about it.

You should take these claims with a grain of salt as we are still talking about gossip and we are unable to confirm the details. Hopefully we'll see more info as we draw closer to the launch date.

Dual GK104 card comes in Q2

A lot of power

Let’s spice things up a bit. Nvidia is about to launch the GTX680 on or around March 22 and it the following quarter, Q2, it plans to launch a dual-chip card based on two GK104 chips.

Since we already wrote that a single GK104 should fare quite well against Radeon HD 7970, wining some and losing some benchmarks, it looks like the dual-chip card will be quite a performer.

Nvidia needs something with two chips to hold the water before the GK110 comes along, since GK110 is the real high-end chip that was intended to fight in the high end market. However, the GK110 will not be ready in months and by the time it appears AMD’s next generation could be just around the corner. In fact, it would be unfair to even compare the GK110 to current generation Radeons, which will be more than nine months old by the time GK110 shows up.

We think that Nvidia will have to reduce the clock and shave a few shaders off the GK104 in order to put two chips on a single card, as currently a single GK104, GTX 680 card ends up close to 200W TDP.

Another big downside to this card is that it will end up really expensive.

Les premières Kepler devraient arriver d'ici 2 semaine :)

le retour des pci-e connector empilé? why not?

Beau design.

GeForce GTX 680 Up To 40% Faster Than Radeon HD 7970: NVIDIA

GPU vendors tend to give out their own performance figures of the products they're launching, compared to competitors' products. In one such comparison, allegedly of the GeForce GTX 680, doing rounds on the internet, NVIDIA's new GPU was evaluated by its makers be be over 40% faster than the Radeon HD 7970 in some tests. Keeping Radeon HD 7970 as a baseline, NVIDIA presented its performance figures for the GeForce GTX 680's leads over it, and Radeon HD 7950's trails under it. Results of as many as 15 tests were presented, from 7 games/benchmarks. All benchmarks were run with and without AA. The one test that caught the eye is Battlefield 3 with "4xAA". Experts we spoke to think NVIDIA could be using FXAA algorithm. In any case, NVIDIA looks to be confident of taking back the fastest-GPU crown from AMD.

GeForce GTX 680 Specifications Sheet Leaked

Chinese media site PCOnline.com.cn released what it claims to be an except from the press-deck of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680 launch, reportedly scheduled for March 22. The specs sheet is in tune with a lot of information that we already came across on the internet, when preparing our older reports. To begin with the GeForce GTX 680 features clock speeds of 1006 MHz (base), and 1058 MHz (boost). The memory is clocked at a stellar 6.00 GHz (1500 MHz actual), with a memory bus width of 256-bit, it should churn out memory bandwidth of 192 GB/s. 2 GB is the standard memory amount.

For the umpteenth time, this GPU does feature 1,536 CUDA cores. The card draws power from two 6-pin PCIe power connectors. The GPU's TDP is rated at 195W. Display outputs include two DVI, and one each of HDMI and DisplayPort. Like with the new-generation GPUs from AMD, it supports PCI-Express 3.0 x16 bus interface, which could particularly benefit Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge-E systems, in cases where the link width is reduced to PCI-Express 3.0 x8 when there are multiple graphics cards installed.
